Compaq Visual Fortran Version 6.6 - READ BEFORE INSTALLING Thank you for choosing Compaq Visual Fortran. So that your installation and use of Visual Fortran is as easy as possible, we strongly recommend reading through the printed Installation and Getting Started manual BEFORE installing. The following tips supplement Installation and Getting Started and will be especially helpful to new Visual Fortran users. Alpha users should be aware that support for Windows NT Alpha systems ended December 31, 2000. Releases of Visual Fortran after Version 6.5A will no longer support Windows NT Alpha systems. Installation: - Your Visual Fortran serial number (also referred to as "Product ID") is a 20-digit number printed on a sticker affixed to the CDrom envelope as well as the license agreement. You will need this for installation now and in the future - please keep it in a safe place. - A "Typical" installation does not include the Samples, which can be referenced from the CD-ROM under INFO\DF\SAMPLES. If you wish to install the samples to your hard disk, select a "Custom" installation. The Compaq Extended Math Library (CXML) is also not included in a "Typical" installation; select "Custom" to install it. - If you do not wish to use the Microsoft Developer Studio IDE and will be doing all development from the command line, choose "Custom" and un-check the option for Developer Studio. Note that the debugger is part of Developer Studio. - Microsoft Internet Explorer must be installed in order to use the integrated online documentation. If you choose to not install Internet Explorer, you can only access Compaq documentation (Programmer's Guide, Language Reference) using the Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) reader and the .PDF files provided. However, you will not be able to read the Microsoft Win32 SDK documentation nor will you be able to use the index or search features of the documentation. - For Windows 95/98 users, we recommend selecting "No" (the default) for the question at the end of installation which asks if you want the Visual Fortran environment variables to be automatically defined. Please see Knowledge Base article Q1018 at http://www.compaq.com/fortran for more details. - Printed documentation included with Visual Fortran is Installation and Getting Started Guide and the Compaq Fortran Language Reference Manual. All other documentation, including the Programmer's Guide, is provided in online form only. Read Installation and Getting Started for information on how to use the documentation. The Programmer's Guide can be purchased separately in printed form - please see our web site for details. - Please read the Release Notes after installation for changes, new features and restrictions. --------------------------------- Other important information: - Visual Fortran v6.6 replaces Visual Fortran v6.5*. There are no released versions of Visual Fortran numbered 6.2, 6.3, or 6.4. - If you are porting a mixed-language Fortran-C application, please read the chapter on mixed-language programming in the online Programmer's Guide for essential information. - Our web site contains a great deal of helpful information, including a Frequently Asked Questions list, Knowledge Base of articles, and back-issues of the Visual Fortran Newsletter, which is full of useful tips and articles.
